If you are planning to come to Scotland and make a tour, go counter-clockwise and mind the season and daytime. Winter days are quite short and driving into the low sun is blinding.

5. Loch Lomond – Loch Ness

I drove it in high season, souther part is low traffic but as you get to the northern side of Loch Ness, the traffic gets much higher (A82). Ride this part early or late during the day if you want to have the space for yourself. The lake is also inviting for a dip. 🙂

4. Around Sky to Ivergarry

Keep in mind that Sky is very busy during the high season and you might not be able to get any accommodation bellow 250 GBP.

Medium to high traffic, especially during the high summer season (A87). This is a short but very popular road among riders. We drove this part during the night when it was all ours and speed was just a feeling. The road is high quality, turns are inviting to enjoy the ride.

2. Dornloch to Wick

Memorable ride from Dornloch to Wick, diverse Scottish terrains. This road is best suited for adventure touring motorcycles or naked bikes, designed to handle various conditions and tight corners with ease. The route offers a mix of smooth roads and winding stretches that lead you through coastal villages, lush landscapes, and striking cliffs. As you ride along, you’ll have a chance to explore historic sites and witness the untamed beauty of the Scottish coast. Arriving in Wick, you’ll be enchanted by its coastal charm and find an array of cozy accommodations to relax after an exhilarating day on the road.

Tip: Ride this road in the evening golden hour. Sun will be shinning either from the side or from behind, opening the beautiful stone-grass scenery as you cut deeper and deeper north. You can expect fairly low traffic on this part of N500 (A9 / A99).
